Sequin Snake Jumper

We had a Christmas jumper themed party to go to over Christmas and because lovely BM doesnt really like Christmas but does like snakes then i thought i could combine the two!
So i made him this...

He looked so funny in it!
I made the snake with stringed sequins, inspired by this jumper at Honestly WTF

Glueing the sequins on was much harder than i thought, and i got glue everywhere! If i ever make one again i think i might glue the sequins onto some kind of iron on paper and then iron that to the jumper...

Drawstring bag (for baby snakes!)

The daughter of a friend of mine is hopefully going to get one of our baby corn snakes as her belated Christmas present. So i thought id made a mini version of my drawstring bags for the baby corn, for the junior herpatologist to take him home in!

Now i have been known to complain that there isnt much you can make (crafting wise) for a pet snake. They arent going to appreciate a little knitted jumper and they certainly arent going to be interested in a little patchwork mousey toy (both suggestions that have been rapidly vetoed by lovely BM, with good reason!)

But when a snake came on loan last month (we borrow snakes to breed with our females) i realised i had missed a trick! The excellent reptile shop we use 888 Reptiles, always deliver their snakes in little cloth bags. These are to keep the snake secure and to make them feel safe as they like small dark environments, especially when potentially stressed. So it thought id have a go at making some myself, for our snakes.

And i love how they turned out. I think thinner cord might be better for the next version, to make the top tighter when closed but apart for that theyre perfect :)

I think im going to iron on the snakes names with transfer paper, its important they have their own to avoid any contamination, and make them even cuter!

Living with snakes - the reality!

I do love my snakes and really theyre very low maintenance pets but one thing i hadnt really appreciated at first was how much room they'd take up!
Every room in my house has a snake in it (except the kitchen and the bathroom obviously) and every possible flat surface has a snake vivarium on it! I think there's probably zoos with less snakes than we have...

So my dining table is currently a snake nursery - 20 baby corn snakes (above) and my living room has an adult corn snake, 2 adult pythons and 5 more baby corn snakes (below). You can just see the carpet python on the right, draping herself across some logs - shes a gorgeous specimen!

And this doesnt even include the python in the master bedroom and the corn snake in quarantine (possible respiratory infection) in the spare bedroom! God knows what we'd do if another one got poorly as we havent got any rooms left to quarantine them in! We're going to need to move house if we get any more!

Babies snakes (well hopefully in a few months!)

Now i know the title alone will have out a few people off but lovely BM and i keep snakes, we have 6 of our own and 4 currently loaned to us for a bit of breeding (yes you counted right, i have 10 snakes in my house!)

Well one of the females laid 21 eggs last week - which is brilliant! We've not had the best of luck breeding, with a dodgy batch last year, that produced 2 very small snakes that we've had to hand feed and then nothing since, even though 2 females showed promising signs they had eggs but none subsequently appeared. So were really pleased to have finally got some eggs, and such a good number. Fingers crossed theyre all fertile and give us some super cute teeny tiny baby snakes in 2 months time. So watch this space (or not if your not a snake fan, baby snakes still seem to freak people out even though they couldnt hurt a fly!)

21 healthy looking eggs, snake eggs are not like bird eggs, theyre soft not hard so thats why they look a bit squidged, and the crosses are so we know which way up they go, the embryo attaches itself to the top of the egg in the air pocket so its important not to turn them.

In addition to both having full time jobs and my quite time consuming love of crafting lovely BM and I also keep snakes. We currently have 11 in the house, i think its officially a zoo! Now,  snakes arent everyone's thing so i wont post any pictures on here but recently we looked after some bearded dragon eggs for a friend and they hatched last week, and they are sooo cute that i have to post some pictures. Everyone loves clumsy baby animals so, even if you dont like reptiles, i think you'll find these pretty adorable!
